MARDI GRAS 2025
The Courir de Mardi Gras is a traditional Mardi Gras event held in many Cajun and Creole communities of French Louisiana. Courir de Mardi Gras is Louisiana French for "Fat Tuesday Run". As Mardi Gras is the celebration of the final day before Lent, celebrants drink and eat heavily, dressing in specialized costumes, ostensibly to protect their identities. In Acadiana, popular practices include wearing masks and costumes, overturning social conventions, dancing, drinking alcohol, begging, trail riding, and feasting. Mardi Gras is one of the few occasions when people are allowed to publicly wear masks in Louisiana.
The Village of Cankton received an A rating for the Water System from the Department of Health. More information about the Water Grade can be found at https://ldh.la.gov/page/water-grade-2023

HISTORY
The Village of Cankton is located on the southern border of St Landry parish in southwest Louisiana. The small community lies along Highway 93 and is a short distance from both Opelousas and Lafayette, Louisiana.
Cankton’s name originated from Dr. Louis Aristide “Cank” Guidry. As a boy, Guidry would signal his family that he was home from a hunt by using the duck call which sounded like “Cank, cank, cank.” His family would say, "Cank est revenue.” (Cank is back) and his name stuck.
